Doing intricate car repairs may be challenging, but maintaining and performing minor fixes on your car can be done with adequate knowledge and instruction. What you need to know is that a car is a complex machine made up of loads of parts that function cooperatively. For them to function without fault, you’ll need to do regular checks and act hastily if you see something wrong.
Keep reading to see the eight things you can do yourself to keep your car in good shape. However, if your car requires new parts, we at A Plus Auto have your back with our “A+” grade car parts. Maintain Brake Performance

To maintain brake performance, start by regularly examining brake components, brake pads, rotors, and calipers. Worn-out pads or rotors will weaken your brakes, so make sure to switch them as soon as possible. Bleeding is also part of the maintenance process for your breaks. It’s a process that takes out the air trapped in the brake lines so the brake fluid can flow freely. You may notice weird noises, such as grinding sounds or vibrations. This could mean your rotors or pads are on their last legs.

Jump Start a Dead Battery

Jump-starting a dead battery isn’t a difficult skill to master and can help you go easy on your wallet. To jump-start a dead battery, do the following;
  1. Start by parking a functioning vehicle next to the one with a dead battery and turn both of them off.
  2. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery and then to the positive terminal of the live battery.
  3. Connect one end of the black clamp to the live battery’s negative terminal and the other to an unpainted metal surface in the dead car’s engine compartment.
  4. Fire up the motor of the functioning car and let it run for a while. After that, try to start the dead car. If it doesn’t start, wait a couple of minutes and try again.
  5. When the dead car starts functioning, remove the cables in reverse.
  6. Drive the car for a minimum of 15 minutes and allow the battery some time to recharge.
If the above steps don’t work, consider checking out our available parts at A Plus Auto.

Check Fluids

There are a few types of fluids you need to keep in check for a smooth ride. First is the engine oil. You need to be parked on a level surface with your engine off to be able to check it. Wait 10 minutes, then locate the dipstick, clean it, reinsert it, and you’re all set. Next is the power steering fluid. Locate the reservoir and clean it around the cap. Look inside and ensure the fluid is between the minimum and maximum marks. If the fluid is a different color than it should be, change it. This also applies to the engine oil.
For the brake fluid, find the reservoir (it should be on the driver’s side) and check if the color is clear or slightly yellow within the range. The coolant mustn’t be below the minimum mark, and you should only check it when the engine’s cool. You can test the transmission fluid when the engine is warm by checking the dipstick. It should typically be red and between the “full” and “add” marks. Lastly, refill the windshield washer fluid regularly with a liquid fit for the current weather conditions.

Tire Maintenance: Pressure, Tread Depth, and Rotation

Three things come to mind that you need to care for when it comes to your tires: the pressure, acceptable tread depth in your area, and regular rotation. For tire pressure, we recommend an electric gauge for ease of use. If your tires are inflated, visit a nearby gas station to adjust them with a tire inflator. To measure the thread depth accurately, you’ll need a reliable tread depth gauge. Additionally, rotate your tires every 10,000 miles to maintain a good tire life and avoid car repairs.

Replace Wiper Blade

Streaking and similar signs when using the wiper blades suggest it’s time for a replacement. To install new blades, follow the given instructions. You’ll need to be extra careful when switching the old blade for the new one. We recommend you hold a tight grip so it doesn’t snap.

Test Headlight and Taillight

Without headlights and taillights, you and other drivers won’t be able to see anything, so testing them regularly is a must. To replace your headlights and taillights, first, check your car’s manual to see what you need to change them. If that doesn’t work, check YouTube for a tutorial on your specific car model. Generally, it’s a quick process that takes less than 30 minutes, and you can opt for used car parts like old bulbs.

Check Air Filter

Air quality is no joke. Regularly maintaining the air filters will save your engine and ensure the air quality in your cabin is safe. You’ll find the air filter on the engine itself. Start by removing and holding it to the sun or a powerful light source. This way, you can see whether the filter is dirty or not. To check and replace the cabin air filter, look at your car’s manual for instructions. Typically, it’s much easier to replace as it only takes a couple of minutes.

Car Cleaning

Car Cleaning Cleaning your car on a regular basis will keep it healthy in the long run and save you tons of money. The exterior of your vehicle is exposed to many harmful elements, from mud and salt to branches and sap. You’ll want to pay attention to these because they can cause significant damage for which you’ll need car repairs later. To prevent damage, wash the exterior and the undercarriage of your vehicle once in a while. This is particularly crucial during snowy weather due to the salt on the roads.
